I love Spring. Spring represents new beginnings, so I felt it only fitting to give my blog a makeover. Please take a few moments and have a look around and let me know what you think!

In celebration of Spring and new beginnings, I'm thrilled to present to you the first necklace in my new series entitled, "Visions of Hope". Each handmade wire nest contains three eggs. The eggs represent part of the Creator's vision of the world. One egg is for love, one for joy and one for peace, granting the wearer a reminder of how the world can be when every person has hope.

At the beginning of this weekend I set 5 goals. I still have a full day of my weekend left and I've accomplished all 5 goals!

1. Make at least 2 sales.
2. Give my blog a makeover.
3. Post a new blog.
4. Make new items.
5. List new items.

I think I'll spend the rest of my Sunday sleeping, watching the Angela Shelton Live Show, and tweeking my blog a bit more.

Music Monday

In an effort to keep myself on a regular posting schedule I've decided to mix things up a little bit :)

Today is Music Monday - every Monday I will post a video of one of my current favorite songs. Today's song is "Fireflies" by Owl City. I first heard this song on the radio last week and from the first note I was hooked. They remind me quite a bit of Death Cab For Cutie, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.

Festivals and Exhibits and Jewelry oh my!

After a far too short but incredibly amazing summer, the cold weather has descended upon us (we actually had snow flurries today!), and I'm starting to fill up my Etsy Shop once again.

This summer I was invited to participate in a local 3 day outdoor art exhibit, Art In The Park, a month long exhibit called "Adornments" at the Alex Dufresne Gallery in Callander, Ontario, and once the exhibit had finished the gallery agreed to sell my jewelry on consignment on a full time basis :).

A few weeks ago I teamed up with my friends from KKaZZ Designs and we participated in the 3rd Annual Can Change Festival. The purpose of the festival is to raise awareness about current local and global environmental concerns and to help promote the organizations, businesses and groups working on environmental issues in the North Bay area.

I'm going to spend the next few months creating more jewelry and to plan for next year's festivals - they are so fun! Nerve wracking but fun!

Gamble Everything For Love Pendant #3

The past few days have been rather "difficult" but as always, I'm fortunate enough to find that "zone" where all of my stresses and worries just vanish as I create. It really IS therapeutic!

I cannot tell you how much I am enjoying making these pendants! I plan on posting one a day to help me get back into the routine of blogging.

I'm not sure if these pieces will end up on Etsy or not, as I've been invited to participate in a month long exhibition showcasing handmade clothing and jewelry from various artists in the region. I'm strongly considering entering these pieces into the exhibition, but I'll likely made some more in a different style and post them to Etsy in the near future. I will definitely keep you posted and will provide more details on the exhibition as I receive it :)

I hope all of my American "flutterers" are enjoying your holiday weekend! Can someone please have a BBQ'ed hamburger for me please? We aren't allowed to have BBQ's in my apartment so I'm kinda missing out on all the GOOD summer foods!

Lots of exciting news to tell you about - however, I don't have all of the information yet, but once I do, I'll be sure to let you all know :) However I am super pleased to announce that my new website, flutteringdesigns.ca, is up and running! Please do let me know what you think :)

Today I was able to find some time to create my second pendant in my newest line, "Gamble Everything For Love". I'm quite happy with how these are turning out!

Once again, the heart was handcrafted with the use of a wire jig and 20g magenta ColourCraft wire and hung a light pink dice bead from the center. I've been getting a lot of positive feedback on my first pendant over on the Fluttering Designs Facebook Fan Page.

First off I'd like to wish all of my American "flutterers" a very Happy 4th of July!!

A few weeks ago I was listening to a song when inspiration hit. I was just enjoying the song and next thing I know, I have an idea for a new line of necklaces! For those of you who are curious, the song is "Gamble Everything For Love" by Ben Lee.

I think I'll be making a variety of designs but this is the first one! I made the heart using a wire jig and 20g sapphire ColourCraft wire and then suspended a light blue glass dice bead from the center. Cute huh?

I've got orders for local shops, co-workers and friends coming out the wazoo! It's all very exciting, but I'm trying to pace myself...and slowly becoming more and more convinced that perhaps teaching the cats how to bead isn't such a crazy idea LOL

Manic Monday

It's amazing how quickly things just fall into place when you take a step back and just allow it to happen! This past week has been a whirlwind of craziness for Fluttering Designs.

- established a partnership with a friend of mine to create jewelry to go with the garments she's selling
- hired a web hosting company to design my personal website
- created rough drafts of designs for posters/flyers advertising Fluttering Designs
- purchased business card sized magnets
- purchased more beading supplies
- received a custom order for a number of pairs of earrings in exchange for a piece of art
- created 5 necklaces and 2 pairs of earrings
- donated one necklace for a charity raffle for the local branch of The Red Cross

Then today I:
- received permission to post flyers/posters advertising Fluttering Designs
- ordered business cards
- accepted another consignment deal through a local shop
- sent at least 10 business related e-mails

All that in addition to working full time.

No wonder they call it Manic Monday!

Yikes! I knew it had been awhile since I had updated, but...I didn't realize it had been so long!

So many things have happened over the past few months, and now that things are finally starting to settle down, I'm able to start thinking about my business again.

Truth be told, I think I'm going to move away from Etsy - I know a lot of people who have had success there, but the jewelry category is soooo saturated that even if I had the money to relist items, they'd be bumped to page 8 in no time flat. I also want to be able to send my customers to one site where they can find everything, quickly and easily. I'm working full-time during the day and my evenings are usually spent either watching past episodes of LOST or playing Guitar Hero with my roommate. I tend to create mostly on the weekends but lately my creativity has been on it's own deserted island...

Which, really, kind of sucks. Well not kind of - it really does suck. I just need some inspiration but it seems as though most of my resources in that area are tapped dry. That's probably why I'm more focused on the marketing side of things right now - thinking about new business cards, a website, etc. Generate more interest and hopefully more sales.

The great thing about Blogger is that once I have my own site up and running I'll still be able to have my blog there without having to copy and paste the old entries or starting new, and people can still "follow" me as well. I just need to find a reliable, economical, Canadian web hosting service and have a chat with my father and I should have a great looking website in no time.

But yes...changing gears here, I'm joining the LOST craze a little late in the game. When there's a lot of hype about a television show, movie or band I tend to stay away. Weird, I know. My roommate has the first 4 seasons on DVD so I'm lucky to be able to see it right from the beginning, and even luckier that he doesn't mind watching episodes he's seen before. Every second or third episode, I find myself turning to him and saying, "Wow, you know, this show is -really- freakin' good!"

I just finished watching an episode and was laughing at myself because I kept jumping and exclaiming "Wait...what?! Oh my gosh! WHOA!"...thankfully my roommate was already sound asleep on the couch so the teasing can occur at some other point in time.

Now that the sunny weather is here, I'm hoping to get some fabulous pictures of my jewelry and I'm hoping the warm weather and cool breezes will be a constant source of inspiration over the summer months and into the fall. I'm already thinking of things to do for the blog to make sure that even if I don't post a novel length blog, there's always new content here so please, bear with me - a few more weeks at the most, I promise, while I get everything figured out, organized and under control. :)

My Holidays In Review

Well I'm back after a busy three days visiting my family who live an hour and a half away. I believe I saw the whole crew save two of three people. Whew!

I had a very pleasant surprise shortly after I arrived at my father's house - my 5 year old nephew and 2 year old niece came to have a sleep over! We all opened our Christmas presents and it was so fun to see their reactions :) I was woken up at 5 am by the sounds of my niece and nephew fighting. They shared a blow-up mattress in the same room I was sleeping in and my niece was sleeping with her head on my nephew's pillow. I lay still and listened and tried my best not to burst out laughing. Here's the actual fight:

Nephew: Please get your head off my pillow.
Niece: *mumbles and moans*
Nephew: Why are you so grumpy? Please get your head off my pillow!
Niece: Stoooop!
Nephew: Do you want me to go to your birthday party? If you don't get your head off my pillow I won't go! I asked you - do you want me to go to your birthday party?!
Niece: NO!!
*Nephew starts sobbing*
Niece: Why are you crying?
Nephew: You hurted my feelings! You don't want me at your birthday party! *still sobbing*
Niece: Fine, I'll move over.

I thought I was going to wet myself listening to the two of them go at it LOL They settled back down and we all went back to sleep until 7 am when my father whispered my niece's name. I jumped about 50 feet when I heard her yell "POPPA!!" They both scampered down the stairs and I fell back to sleep until shortly after 11 am when I heard my niece screaming, "Auntie Ne-Nessa! It's time to get up!" Apparently I wasn't getting up as quickly as she would have liked since she screamed it about 20 times. I could hear my step-mother telling her that I would get up when I was ready and my niece telling her that I just wasn't listening LOL!

We spent the rest of the time I was there running errands and visiting various family members. The drive there and back home was nice - the roads were a bit wet but there was no snow or ice to worry about, and the weather was nice sunny for the most part both days that I was traveling.

My handmade beaded ornaments were a hit and I have a few people wanting me to do workshops on them next year so I'm quite pleased with that. I also received my first cheque from one of the shops where I have my jewelry on consignment and was pleased to discover that 5 of my pieces from my first shipment sold. They returned the items that didn't sell so I have to check with the art gallery and see if they will display them and if they don't have the room they will be listed on Fluttering Designs.

I have a lot of great ideas for Fluttering Designs in 2009, but I think I'll save those for another blog post :)

Snowflakes & Angels

Don't you just love that "Oh CRAP, I forgot to buy Suzie a holiday gift!" feeling? Me too!

I had one of those moments earlier this week. My trip to visit my father and step-mother has been postponed for a few days thanks to the weird and wacky weather we're currently receiving. While I was talking to one of my friends, the realization that I had completely blanked on her when it was time for me to do my gift shopping hit. Luckily for me, my creative juices started flowing at the exact same moment. Awkward moment averted! SUCCESS!

I pulled out a couple of ornament kits and went to work. As the ornaments were being created, the list of recipients was growing rather quickly which only helped to maintain the creative flow.

The creative zone is one that brings me much joy, peace and calm. It's very rare that I will only create one thing in one sitting - I usually end up making two or three different items out of the beads! The past few nights were no exception. Not only did I make the ornaments, the packaging was also created by yours truly!

I enjoyed creating these ornaments so much that I'm already starting to plan workshops around the idea for next year. WOOT!

It's been a crazy couple of days - getting ready for Christmas (I waited until the very last second this year), trying to figure out travel plans and shoveling my car out from under the mounds of snow we've been getting. This hasn't left me with much time to do much else other than relax my sore and tired muscles and sleep, so my poor blog was neglected for a few days.

Pay It Forward - Be A Santa's Helper!

Every once in awhile an opportunity presents itself to make a simple gesture to help bring an extra special Christmas to someone you don't even know.

Huckleberry Arts has a wonderful friend and she takes care of her neighbor who has cancer. Unfortunately, this will be her last Christmas.

What we would like to do is get as many people as possible send her a Christmas Card! Address it from the North Pole, and sign it "Santa's Helper". This is a chance for us to give freely and help spread someone some extra Christmas cheer!

Why We Love Children

A few weeks ago my mother shared a funny e-mail forward with me and I got a kick out of it so I thought I'd share some of my favorite ones.

A kindergarten pupil told his teacher he'd found a cat, but it was dead. "How do you know that the cat was dead?" she asked him. "Because I pissed in its ear and it didn't move," answered the child innocently. "You did WHAT?!!" the teacher exclaimed in surprise. "You know," explained the boy, "I leaned over and went 'Pssst!' and it didn't move."

One summer evening during a violent thunderstorm a mother was tucking her son into bed. She was about to turn off the light when he asked with a tremor in his voice, "Mommy, will you sleep with me tonight?" The mother smiled and gave him a reassuring hug. "I can't dear," she said. "I have to sleep in Daddy's room." A long silence was broken at last by his shaky little voice: "The big sissy."

And last but not least, my very favorite!

One day the first grade teacher was reading the story of Chicken Little to her class. She came to the part where Chicken Little warns the farmer. She read"...and Chicken Little went up to the farmer and said, "The sky is falling!" The teacher then asked the class, "And what do you think that farmer said?" One little girl raised her hand and said, "I think he said: 'Holy Sh*t! A talking chicken!" The teacher was unable to teach for the next 10 minutes.

Update on the furbaby

For those of you who were in the Plugger's United chat over on BlockHead Radio at the start of the show, I apologize for my panicked early departure.

Since the end of September I've been having to bring one of my cats back and forth to the vet on a fairly regular basis. He has what they call idiopathic cystitis - from what I understand it's a lower urinary tract infection with no known origin. He'll go for about a week of behaving normally and then he starts showing signs of a partial blockage. The last time I brought him in he was near death - if a male cat becomes fully blocked they usually have 24-36 hours to live. Thankfully I'm a bit obsessive with my cats so I notice the second something is wrong.

After speaking with a few friends and my mother I decided to take it easy for the rest of last night and get him in to the vet first thing this morning. I had to think about some difficult choices last night, including putting him to sleep. It's not fair to make him go through the rest of his life in that kind of annoying pain. After speaking with the vet today she assured me that we would not have to take this route any time soon. She gave him a shot of antibiotics, and told me to stay home with him today if possible just to make sure he doesn't have any reactions and to put him at ease (and myself as well).

I had to leave work to take him in and at that point I was still in the "I'm going to have to say goodbye to my furbaby" state of mind so I was an emotional basketcase. I spoke to my acting supervisor, explained my fears and was told to take him to the vet and we'd go from there. When I returned to work my acting supervisor told me to take the rest of the day as a vacation day.

I've had an extremely stressful few weeks and I'm mentally, emotionally and physically exhausted.

I was asked before I left chat to let everyone know how the kitty made out so here's your update. I want to thank Rod and the whole crew for their kind thoughts, well wishes and words of encouragement. I am so blessed to have found such a great community!

For now though, I must get some rest.

I received a bar of the Honey Pot soap and let me tell you - the fragrance of this soap is divine. Not only does it help to wash the wicked away, it makes me want to be even more wicked than I already am so that I can use it over and over and over!

Here's some pics for you to drool over. They haven't invented scratch & sniff monitors yet... (probably for the best, let's be honest folks!)...so you'll just have to order a bar of soap from The Copper Cauldron and try (and smell!) it for yourselves!!

Art Gallery Fun!

Today I stopped in at the local art gallery to see my jewelry display in the exhibit currently going on and to submit some pieces for consignment in the little store in the gallery. I only expected them to take 4 or 5 pieces but they took everything I brought in! I was pleasantly surprised to say the very least! I was also asked if I'd be interested in volunteering in the little store for 4 hours a week so we're setting that up and seeing if there's a way for me to bring some beads and supplies in with me and create while I watch the store front. Fun!

Of course I had to take some pictures of my display in the exhibit :)

Exciting news!

I received some very exciting news this week. Not only is my jewelry on display in an exhibition at one of the local art galleries, they're also asking me to bring some jewelry in to sell in the little store in the art gallery! I'm bringing some pieces in tomorrow and we'll go over the pricing and displays and I'll get to see my jewelry in the exhibit! I'm going to bring my camera :)

I've also been asked by the out of town shop where I sell my jewelry on consignment to send as much as I possibly can to them within the next two weeks. I've already made 10 pairs of angel earrings and I have a bunch of necklaces already made so it's just a matter of sitting down and writing an inventory and pricing list and shipping it off.

I'm hoping that my online shop, Fluttering Designs, soon sees a boost in sales! I've been really lucky with some online giveaways so I'm hoping that's a sign of things to come.

I'm going to be dedicating a whole other blog post to the different items I've won and purchased on Etsy.com so stay tuned for that later this week!

Thank you so much for stopping by this little blog of mine! I've been making jewelry for a little over a year. I was bored one night so I decided to try and create a beaded tree using wire, seed beads, bugle beads, glass hearts and glass leaves which I wrapped around a chunk of amethyst. I then added two Lapis Lazuli and Garnet gemstone chips to the end of each "branch". I was pretty pleased with the results given it was the first time I had attempted such a thing!

Then I started thinking about making gemstone chip trees and then I had a brilliant idea: I could make gemstone chip necklaces and earrings and it has only grown from there.

I began taking pictures of my jewelry and posting them to my Facebook account and soon afterwards I was receiving messages from my friends all over the US and Canada asking if I was selling my jewelry online. I had been selling my jewelry on consignment in a local New Age store so I had no idea where to go until a friend suggested esty.com and I set up my shop in February of this year.

I consider myself to be a very creative person and when I'm not creating jewelry, I'm typically playing acoustic guitar (...by play, I mean that I totally butcher the songs...) or editing videos of friends and family.
